Wednsday, The last day

Today was the last day of building our Solar Oven. We...
  • Got the trapazoid reflectors cut
  • Put foil on the trapzoid reflectors
  • Drilled holes on the reflectors to hook together
  • Then we screwed the screws into the reflectors

First we got the extra wood we had and took it down to the facilities to get cut. We measured the trapzoids to be 10 x 24 1/2 x 13 in. Then we got them cut and went back to the classroom. We then drilled holes into the already drilled on reflectors for the other two reflectors. Then we used brackets to screw the two trapazoids on. After that we were.... FINISHED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tuesday, Day 6 of building

Today is the 6th day building our Solar Oven.

We bought hinges for the reflectors and bent then to excactly 120 degrees. We then screwed in the hinges into the sides of the cooking box. We screwed the reflectors onto the hinges but we had a problem. The screw tips were sticking out ofthe reflectors. We figure we could get some erasers to cover the points or safety. we screw in two panels that day. Then we had to clean up.

Monday, Day 5

Today is Monday, our 5th day of building our functioning model, A solar oven. Today we created the reflectors.

I brought aluminum foil for the reflectors. We taped the foil on to create a mirror like board for directing sunlight into the black box. Then we started adjusting the hinges to fit the right angle we wanted the board to be tilted at. Then once we did that we had to pick up.

Friday, Day 4

Today is Friday the 16th. Today we got the glass cut and glued it on. And we also got the wood for the reflectors cut.

We went down to the facilities to get our glass panel and reflectors cut to size. Then we returned to the class room. We glued the glass panel with Gorilla Glue. Then we put a heavy box to weight down the glass panel so it would stick. Then we left it like that for 2 days....

Thursday, Day 3`

Today's Thursday, Day 3. Today we applied 3 coats of paint to the box and started planning out how the reflectors would be measured.

We got the box, black paint and paintbrushes for wood. We painted the entire inside of the box black to absorb maximum heat. Then after we applied 3 coats, we worked on how we would put on the reflectors. we firgured it would be easier to do if we make 2 sides squares and the other 2 trapazoids. After we were about to figure out what the measurements were, we had to clean up.

Wednesday, Day 2

Today was our 2nd day of building our function model demonstrating how Solar Energy can be put to use.

A group member brought in a wooden box for the solar oven. We hinged on another piece of wood to create a door for the oven. It took a while to screw in the screw for the hinge and we had no idea why. The screws just wouldn't go into the hole we drilled for them. Then while trying things like making the hole bigger to help the screws in, we realized something. That entire time we were trying to drill the screws in, the drill was going in reverse! xD After we switched it, it was much easier to drill the screws in.

After we screwed on the hinges, we grabbed some black paint and a wood paintbrush. We were about to start painting when it was time to clean up. All we accomplished today was screwing on the hinges for the oven door, but at least it's something right?

Day 1 of building the Functioning Model

Today was the first day that we started building our models that use our selected renewable energy sources. Our's was Geothermal, heat from the Earth. Since we cant make a model demonstrating Geothermal energy, we were given the option of either Wind Power or Solar Power. We chose Solar. The Model we wanted to build was a solar oven. We wrote down the materials we would need and the tools. We also made diagrams to show how the oven would look finished. We decided we needed....
  • Plywood
  • Wood Glue
  • Wood Screws
  • Aluminum Foil
  • 2 Hinges
  • Black Paint
  • A Saw

That is what we did today. We didn't get to constructing it because we didnt have the supplies.
